We hope everyone will turn out for our next Pathfinder Produce
fresh fruits and veggie market, this Thursday, July 2, from 1 to 5 p.m. A
diet rich in fresh produce is key to being healthy and declaring your
independence from a host of medical issues. We hope to see you this
Thursday at the “little market that could!”

Beat
the Drum Loudly!
This
has certainly been a memorable week, with local kids joyfully starting their
summer vacations, many young adults graduating from high school, and of course,
the 2-0 win of the US Women’s Soccer Team at the World Cup on Tuesday
night. (Good luck in the game on Sunday!) Sometimes there is so
much going on that it’s really hard to keep up with events.
Summer
is a good time for families to recommit to healthy activities. I have to
extend kudos to my son, who decided (without my nagging) to jog at least a mile
each day in preparation for the Headwaters Soccer Camp
and his fall soccer season. He created his own trail around the perimeter
of our property (which we keep mowed), and he goes at his own pace, building
stamina and increasing his distance. An unexpected benefit of his running
is that our highly energetic lab, Della, now 6, runs with him and has trimmed
down. She loves it and contentedly snores through the evening like a
freight train.
Here
at Pathfinder, we’re freeing ourselves from the soggy shackles of rainy
weather, and our residents and staff are starting to use the new Pathfinder
Community Trail regularly … it was on one of our nicer days that I saw our
Assistant Director of Enrichment Char Orendorff (our own life coach!) leading
hikers to the trail for an afternoon adventure. We invite area residents
to try the trail as part of their independent fitness programs: Please be
sure to carry out anything you carry in, keep your canine companions on a
leash, and carry a cell phone with you should you require assistance.
Independence
is something we celebrate and work towards every day at Pathfinder, and we’re
all looking forward to picnics, fireworks and other activities related to July
Fourth. On Friday we’ll welcome our good friend Jim Talbot from DrumQuest who will offer a rhythm drumming
workshop. Jim’s workshops help people foster communities of unity
and collaboration, overcome limiting self-beliefs (which can hinder growth and
independence), and experience self-discovery. I hope to get some pictures
of this great activity!
If
you think about it, independence (the sound of a single drum representing
confidence and achievement), and interdependence (the positive outcomes that
result from a drum chorus creating something unique and exciting) are all part
of the same continuum. I invite folks to try their own drum circles this
weekend, just by grabbing some pots and pans, wooden spoons, plastic buckets or
what have you … just to have fun. (This would be a perfect fire pit activity
for friends and family!).
Until
next time, beat the drum loudly and be well!
